Salt Pans

The Xwejni Salt Pans stretch for several kilometers along the northern coast of Gozo between Xwejni Bay and the area west of Żebbuġ. The geometrically arranged salt pans were carved directly into the flat limestone of the coast, creating a landscape that is hard to find anywhere else on Gozo.

Traditional salt production has been carried out in this area for centuries and is still partially continued today. Seawater is channeled into the shallow pans and evaporates during the hot summer months. What remains is the sea salt, which is then collected by hand.

Particularly noteworthy is the combination of the checkerboard salt pans, the bright limestone, and the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. Along the coastal road, you can explore the Salt Pans on foot and discover different perspectives of the extraordinary formations.

A visit can be excellently combined with Xwejni Bay and Marsalforn. Especially in the late afternoon and at sunset, the coast offers an impressive atmosphere. Important: The salt pans are not an ordinary visitor attraction, but are still partially working areas. Therefore, do not enter the pans and respect barriers and signs from the salt producers.
