Ta' Pinu

The Ta’ Pinu Basilica is located outside the village of Għarb in western Gozo and is among the most well-known churches and important pilgrimage sites of the Maltese archipelago. Its almost freestanding position between fields and hills makes the monumental church particularly striking.

Its significance as a pilgrimage site dates back to events in 1883, when local resident Karmni Grima reportedly heard the voice of the Virgin Mary in the then-small chapel. After further miracles and healings were attributed to the site, Ta’ Pinu developed into a major destination for pilgrims.

The current basilica was built in the 20th century from the typical Maltese limestone. Inside, you will find elaborate stonework, mosaics, and numerous votive offerings from the faithful. The original small chapel has also been integrated into the church building.

In front of the basilica, there is a large open square, while the surroundings are characterized by the tranquil landscape of western Gozo. From here, you have beautiful views towards Għarb and the surrounding hills. On the opposite Għammar Hill, there is also a Stations of the Cross that further enhances the religious character of the site.

Thus, Ta’ Pinu is worthwhile not only for pilgrims. The combination of extraordinary architecture, history, and its secluded location makes the basilica one of the most remarkable stops on a tour of Gozo.
