Events in Malta and Gozo
Throughout the year, numerous events take place in Malta and Gozo that provide a great insight into life on the islands. The spectrum ranges from traditional village feasts and religious festas to concerts, festivals, food events, markets, sports events, parties, and smaller local happenings. Especially in summer, hardly a week goes by without celebrations happening somewhere in Malta or Gozo.
At MaltaIsle, we present current events that we find interesting and have either already attended or wish to attend. Our aim is not to create a complete event calendar but to curate a selection of events that we believe are worth a closer look.
Discover Current Events in Malta and Gozo
Despite its manageable size, Malta has a surprisingly active event scene. Particularly during the summer months, concerts, festivals, traditional festas, club events, and cultural happenings take place simultaneously. In Gozo, the offerings are generally smaller, but many events have a noticeably more personal and local character. This mix makes the islands interesting. While large festivals attract international visitors, smaller local events often provide more authentic experiences. Therefore, it is worthwhile during your stay to not only look for the most famous names but also to keep an eye on smaller events and regional festivals.
Events We Attend Ourselves
In our recommendations, we aim to stay as close to the actual experience as possible. Therefore, we attend events ourselves when time permits. We are interested not only in the official program but also in the atmosphere on-site, the organization, and whether a visit is worthwhile overall. In the case of events, reality can often differ significantly from promotional images and announcements. A small local feast can end up being much more atmospheric than a heavily advertised event. Conversely, large festivals can be very professionally organized and become highlights of a Malta trip.
Our assessments are meant to help you better understand what to expect on-site and for whom a particular event is suitable.
Events We Wish to Attend
Of course, we cannot have attended every event already. That’s why you will also find current events on MaltaIsle that we wish to attend ourselves and find interesting based on their program, location, or concept. In such cases, we consciously differentiate between personal experience and editorial recommendation. If we later attend the event ourselves, we can adjust our assessment accordingly.
This way, the event selection on MaltaIsle remains vibrant and evolves with actual experiences.
Traditional Festas in Malta and Gozo
Among the most extraordinary events are the traditional Maltese festas. These feasts are closely linked to individual towns, villages, and their patron saints, and they are an integral part of life on the islands, especially in summer.During a festa, an entire place can transform. Streets are decorated, churches are festively lit, and squares fill with people in the evening. Depending on the event, music, processions, and fireworks are also part of the celebration.
What makes these festas special is that they are not primarily organized for tourists. They are part of the local culture and therefore provide you with a much more authentic insight into life in Malta and Gozo.
Why a Festa is Especially Interesting
If a festa is taking place near you during your trip, it is almost always worth a visit. In the evening, a special atmosphere arises as entire streets are adorned and illuminated. In Gozo, such events often feel even more personal because the places are smaller and many visitors come from the immediate vicinity.
Anyone who wants to experience Malta and Gozo not just as a holiday destination but also wants to get a taste of the local culture should attend at least one festa.
Fireworks are Part of Malta
Fireworks play a significantly larger role in Malta than in many other European countries. Especially during the summer months and around festas, they are often a fixed part of the program. At larger events, the fireworks are not just a brief finale but can be a central component of the evening. This results in very impressive shows that illuminate entire towns and bays.
If you are sensitive to loud noises, you should keep this in mind when planning. For those who enjoy fireworks, Malta regularly offers impressive events.
Music Festivals and Concerts
Malta regularly attracts international artists, DJs, and festival organizers. Especially in summer, there is a wide selection of electronic music, pop, classical concerts, and smaller live events. The venues vary widely. Some events take place in classic clubs or arenas, while others utilize historical buildings, squares, or open-air locations.
This combination of music and unique settings makes many events in Malta interesting. A concert in a historical setting feels significantly different from a regular event in a classic hall.
Nightlife and Club Events
St. Julian’s and particularly Paceville are the center of Malta's nightlife. In addition to regular clubs, there are often special parties, DJ events, and multi-day festivals.Especially during the peak season, the offerings are vast. At the same time, Paceville may not be the right environment for everyone. Those who want to party will find a high density of bars and clubs here. Those seeking tranquility should better avoid accommodations directly in the center of nightlife.
Events that take place deliberately outside of Paceville and utilize special locations are also exciting. Such events often offer a distinctly unique atmosphere.
Events in Gozo
Gozo has a smaller event scene than Malta, but that’s exactly what makes many events there particularly charming. Events often feel more personal and local, while larger concerts or cultural events utilize extraordinary backdrops.Victoria, or Rabat, serves as an important hub. The Citadella, in particular, is regularly used for cultural events and concerts. At the same time, interesting events also take place in places like Xlendi, Marsalforn, and smaller villages.
Therefore, during the summer, it is worthwhile to not only look for events in Victoria but also to consider smaller locations.
