Sliema and St Julian’s are the modern counterpoint to the historic towns: an unbroken waterfront promenade of around seven kilometres, bathing platforms cut into the limestone instead of sandy beaches, and hotels, cafés and shopping streets behind them. Ferries run from Sliema Ferries to Valletta in a few minutes. St Julian’s has Spinola Bay with restaurants at the water’s edge, and Paceville, the island’s nightlife quarter, just north of it.
