In Malta, Gozo, and Comino, you’ll find a wide selection of restaurants, cafés, bars, food trucks, and small local businesses. The range goes from traditional Maltese cuisine to Italian restaurants, fish places, and even sushi, BBQ, burgers, kebabs, and international concepts. Particularly in Malta, the variety is vast, while Gozo is significantly smaller and more manageable.

On MaltaIsle, we showcase restaurants that we have personally visited and vetted. We evaluate not only the food but the entire experience on-site. This includes service, atmosphere, value for money, location, and whether a restaurant lives up to its own claims.

We consciously try not to sugarcoat everything. If something is very good, we say so clearly. If there are areas for improvement, we mention them as well. Many restaurants have minor weaknesses that can be easily overlooked if the overall picture is right. That's what our recommendations are about.

Restaurants in Malta, Gozo, and Comino honestly rated

Perfect pictures and high ratings only help to a certain extent when it comes to restaurants. A place might look excellent online but feel mediocre in person. Conversely, there are smaller restaurants that might not stand out but impress with good food, friendly service, and a pleasant atmosphere.

That's why we don't rely solely on review platforms or social media. We visit the restaurants ourselves and form our own opinions on-site. Only after that do we decide whether a restaurant will be featured on MaltaIsle and how we assess it.

Our goal is not artificial perfection. A restaurant doesn’t have to excel in every single aspect to be recommended. What matters is whether the positive aspects outweigh the negatives and if you know what to expect before your visit.

What we evaluate in restaurants

When visiting a restaurant, we pay attention to more than just the first plate. Of course, the quality of the food is at the center, but service and the overall environment also play a crucial role. A very good dish can lose its impact if the service is chaotic or the waiting time doesn’t fit the concept. At the same time, a simple restaurant with honest cuisine and a good atmosphere can be much more convincing than a high-priced place with inflated expectations.

We always look at the overall package. This includes taste, quality of ingredients, portion sizes, presentation, friendliness, waiting times, cleanliness, location, and value for money. This leads to a much more realistic assessment than just a star rating.

Good restaurants can have weaknesses

We don’t expect every restaurant to be perfect. Especially in Malta and Gozo, many smaller businesses don’t have every process as standardized as in large international chains.

That's why we differentiate between real problems and points that can be easily lived with. For example, a slightly slower service can be perfectly acceptable if the food is excellent and the restaurant functions overall in a relaxed manner. A small menu is also not a disadvantage if the dishes offered are well-prepared.

It’s important for us to address these points openly. This way, you can decide for yourself whether a restaurant meets your expectations.

Why we mention negative points

A restaurant recommendation is only helpful if it remains credible. If every place is described exclusively with perfect food, great service, and a dreamy atmosphere, it won’t help you much in making a choice.

That’s why we also mention things we didn’t like as much. This could be a longer waiting time, a single weaker dish, a very touristy location, or a price level that is a bit higher than expected.

These points do not automatically mean that we do not recommend a restaurant. In many cases, the positive aspects clearly outweigh the negatives. What matters is that you know in advance what you’re getting into.

Restaurants in Malta

Malta offers the largest gastronomic selection in the archipelago. Particularly in Valletta, Sliema, and St. Julian’s, you'll find numerous restaurants across various categories.

The range goes from fine dining to casual eateries and international concepts. At the same time, the competition is high, meaning you can find both very good and significantly average restaurants.

In heavily touristed areas, it is especially worthwhile to take a closer look. A good location right by the water or on a well-known street is not a guarantee of good food.

That’s why we pay attention to whether the restaurant also impresses independently of its location in our recommendations.

Restaurants in Gozo

Gozo has a smaller but interesting restaurant scene. It is also noticeable that many menus are relatively similarly structured. Pizza, pasta, burgers, fish, meat, and some Maltese classics can be found in numerous restaurants.

This makes the places that consciously stand out particularly interesting. This can happen through a clear specialization, unusual dishes, or an unconventional concept.

In Gozo, we find smaller providers, food trucks, and local businesses exciting because they often have more personality than restaurants with a very broad standard menu.

Restaurants in Comino

Comino is gastronomically much more limited than Malta and Gozo. The island is primarily visited as a day trip destination and thus has fewer permanent dining options.

If you are planning a trip to Comino, you shouldn’t expect the same variety as in Sliema, Valletta, or Victoria. It is often more sensible to plan your restaurant visit before or after the excursion in Malta or Gozo.

If you are traveling with a private boat or on a longer tour, it may also be more pleasant to bring food and drinks with you.
